  58. I know it is rude to post a followup to your own article, but I found
  59. out what the problem was.  It seems that my internal drive was bad
  60. when I bought the machine, but worked.  It got progressively worse, to
  61. a state where it was no longer usable.  Well it was also the reason
  62. some of my disk's were getting trashed.  I went back to my Local
  63. Dealer(I know, I am Lucky!) and he replaced the drive for me free of
  64. charge, even though I opened the machine to put in my Ram!

  109. Hmm, this is a toughie. Think I got the problem though, and mebbe the
  110. solution...
  111.  
  112. Sounds like the word processor doesn't like IBM disks. It's probably
  113. programmed to test the disk more than the Atari desktop (GEM) does. So,
  114. save the file (as ASCII text, if you can) on an Atari disk. Quit the
  115. word processor, and copy the file from the Atari disk to the IBM disk
  116. FROM THE DESKTOP.
  117.  
  118. Caveat: sometimes the Atari doesn't like IBM disks due to an obscure
  119. thing called the "disk serial number", something which Ataris write to
  120. disks but IBMs don't... if the Atari sees two disks with the same serial
  121. number, it screws up *BAD* (thinks they're the same disk.) If the
  122. procedure I previously listed doesn't work, try copying the file to a
  123. RAMdisk or a hard drive (if your friend has one) first and then to the
  124. IBM disk. I hate GEM file copy anyway, you hafta swap disks umpteen
  125. times and it's slooooooow.

  197. This is a basic guide to ftp.  It is intended only to get you on your
  198. way to ftp happiness.  Please let me know if you have any comments,
  199. questions, or suggestions.

  207. Part 1: Logging in
  208. To begin an ftp session, the first thing you need to do is log in to our
  209. machine.  You can do this by issuing the 'ftp atari.archive.umich.edu'
  210. command.  You should then see something like this:
  211.  
  212. Connected to atari.archive.umich.edu.
  213. 220 atari.archive.umich.edu FTP server (Version 4.169 Wed Jan 2 17:03:56 EST 199
  214. 1) ready.
  215. Name (yourhost.domain.edu:yourusername):
  216.  
  217. At this prompt you'll want to type 'anonymous'.  On some hosts, the word
  218. 'guest' will work, but 'anonymous' is always a sure bet.
  219.  
  220. If you don't see this login prompt, but instead get something like
  221. 'Our host was unable to trace a name back to (some internet address).
  222.  We only accept ftp from properly registered hosts', then you'll have to
  223. ask your sys-admin to properly register your machine in its name servers.
  224. There's nothing we can do on this end, so please don't bother asking.
  225. Also, if your machine doesn't allow you to specify the atari.archive name,
  226. try using out internet address : 141.211.164.8  Then, march down to
  227. your sys-admins office and ask him to install name-service.  Your life will
  228. become much easier.
  229.  
  230. Assuming you recieved the above prompt, you'll then be asked for a
  231. password.  Use your mail address. For example, I would use
  232. 'weiner@atari.archive.umich.edu'
  233.  
  234.  
  235. Part 2: Basic Commands
  236. Once you're logged on, there's a few basic commands you'll want to know about.
  237.  
  238. ls  : lists the names of files of sub-directories in a directory.
  239. ls -C  : Lists the files horizontally, instead of vertically.
  240. dir : does the same thing as ls, but is needed on some other machines
  241. ls -l : A verbose listing of files.  Includes permissions, filesize, etc.
  242. cd  : changes directories (i.e. 'cd atari' would put you in the atari area)
  243. cd .. : Goes 'back up' a directory, to the one you came from.
  244.  
  245. These are about all you need to get moving around the archive.
  246.  
  247.  
  248. Part 3: Getting the Goddies
  249.  
  250. The main reason you want to ftp in the first place is to quickly transfer
  251. files.  More often than not, you'll want to transfer the files from
  252. the archive to your account.  You can do this using the following commands:
  253.  
  254. First, find the file you want to download.
  255. Second, issue the command 'type binary'.  This tells our machine that
  256. you'll be transferring a binary file.  This is really important.  You'll
  257. waste a LOT of time if you download files that were not transferred in
  258. binary mode.
  259. Third, issue this command 'get <filename.ext>'.  This will instruct
  260. the archive host to send <filename.ext> to your account.
  261.  
  262. The last thing you'll want to do is use the 'quit' command.  This
  263. tells our machine you're no longer interested in ftping files, and would
  264. like to go back to your command prompt.
  265.  
  266. Now, you'll need to download your files from your mainframe(sparc, whatever)
  267. to your ST.  Usually you'll want to use either kermit or x- or y- or z-modem
  268. protocals.  They're very reliable.  I'd be quite hesitant to try something
  269. else.  Also, your machine and ST are usually unique to you.  This means
  270. that I really can't help you with this part.  You could try asking, but
  271. I'm going to promise anything.
  272.  
  273. Part 4: A Few Words on Net Ettiquette
  274.  
  275. Net Ettiquette is something that every net user should be aware of.
  276. Relating to ftp, and our archive, it is essentially this:
  277.  
  278. 1)  Try to keep ftp usage to an absolute minimum during business hours,
  279. in our time zone.  That would be 9 am to 5 pm , EST.  This roughly means
  280. upload or download one file or so and little else during these hours.  After
  281. 5pm, have a blast.  Go nuts.  We probably won't mind nearly as much.....
  282. Otherwise, we will drive to your campus or place of work (even if you
  283. live in Europe) and we'll kick youe butt.  Or, Jon will sing Prince
  284. songs to you.  Whichever you'd like the least.
  285.  
  286. 2)  If you have a question about some aspect of ftp service or some
  287. other area of your computer, please ask around at your site first.  Don't
  288. immediately fire off all of your questions to us.  I don't mind answering
  289. questions about the archive, problems with logging in, or something
  290. similar.  But I tend to get upset when people ask me questions like,
  291. "Jeff, how come I can't get the fgrep command to work properly on
  292. my sparc station...."
  293.  
  294. 3) Please try to upload files that you know the archive doesn't have.  I
  295. know it's not the greatest thing to do, but if you can find time to
  296. download stuff, I think you can find time to return the favor and
  297. upload things also.

  321.   I've posted a few bits and pieces lately about the graphics capabilities
  322. of the ST series, but I don't seem to have learned much, so, here are
  323. all my questions....if you can help me, I would greatly appreciate it...

  325. 1)      I have a 520 STE (w 4/meg add on)...and the SM 124.  I asked a few
  326. weeks ago about graphics on this kind of system, and a number of people
  327. all suggested that I look into GIF stuff...I have been doing so, downloading
  328. dozens at a time from wuarchive, and viewing them on the PC that does the
  329. downloading - they all look brilliant.  But when I get them home they look
  330. crap.
  331.         Is the usual method of de-giffing a colour (heck, even mono) picture
  332. onto an ST merely the clumping of black and white dots, at a horrendous
  333. resolution?  I know that a lot of effort went into writing these programmes
  334. out there, but it seems amazing to me that on the VGA system (yes, I know
  335. it has better graphics) it can look so amazing, and on my ST it looks like
  336. someone sneezed!  Am I doing something wrong?  I've been using ViewPic which
  337. is very nice for loading gif images, and works in mono or coulour (but looks
  338. bad either way...the colours are all off), but the gray images still look
  339. like nothing more than clever optical illusions...
  340.  
  341. So...:
  342.  
  343. 2)      Does the STE have gray scales, you know, proper shades of gray, not
  344. just the nearness of black and white pixels?  How can I use these scales?
  345. When I look in magazines I see some AMAZING pictures on SM124s that are
  346. gray, but look as sharp as a photograph!  They ought to!  600 x 400 should
  347. yield fantastic quality...so, where is it?
  348.  
  349. 3)      Is there any source ftpable that has a collection, or even just
  350. a few, of these images?   What might they be called?  What kind of suffixes
  351. will they have?  GR8? GR9?
  352.  
  353. 4)      Is it possible to get Gif images to look remotely nice on a STE?

  401.  I was wondering if the Multi-Scan monitors are same as multisync.
  402. Because there is a local store here with multi-scan SVGA monitors
  403. 1024x768 .28mm for only $380.00, It is a Samsung monitor.  I have also
  404. seen Panasync 1391 monitors as low as $329.00 WOW.  This is not a miss
  405. type price since I thought it was, but it's not.
  406.  The computer prices around Denver Colorado has been very low, I guess
  407. it is due to the low sales, 486 systems are as low as 1800.00 here.
  408. Can someone please tell me what the 486 systems and TT are going for
  409. elsewhere?
  410. I been deciding on getting a TT system, but since the prices are falling
  411. around here, perhaps I should wait.   I already have 486 system, but still
  412. like to have a TT.

  430. I've got a .pi3 file that I want to make my desktop on NeoDesk, but
  431. when I rename it to Neopic_H.pi3 (as the manual says to do) and
  432. restart, it reverses the black and white of the image....if I double
  433. click on the file it shows up as normal...but when it goes to the
  434. desktop it inverts....why?

  450. I checked the April edition of ST Format and saw that NoiseTracker was
  451. advertised by various PD Software companies:

  454. p126  Demo Club ("Noisetracker V1.5 - The latest version with English docs")

  456. p130  Wizard PD

  458. Nobody was charging more than #2.50 for it ($5).
  459.  
  460. Unlike Audio Sculpture, it allows you to save modules.  It also works
  461. perfectly on a 520 - I haven't yet come across a module too big to load.
  462. So, I presume it will soon be verified and available from atari.archive as
  463. noiztrkr.lzh, either in atari/music/ or atari/sound/players.  (Note that
  464. Audio Sculpture has been moved from atari/graphics to the latter directory.)

  534. The DeskJet 500 has the same problem.  I installed a _diode_ per the
  535. instructions that someone had posted on GEnie.  The diode works just
  536. fine on the DeskJet and will probably work just fine on the LaserJet
  537. IIp, IMHO.

  552. Depending on the situation, the first is usually correct. When a 68000 sees
  553. a short address it sign-extends the address to 32 bits, and $8e20 extended is
  554. $ffff8e20. So, for instance, the following two instructions have the exact
  555. same effect, only the second one is 4 clock cycles slower:

  558.   move.w   d0, $ffff8e20

  560. I'm not quite sure why it would take 0xff8e20 and convert it to 0xffff8e20,
  561. but doing so causes no harm on any 68000 system since the upper 8 bits of an
  562. address are ignored, nor does it cause any harm on the TT/030 because it
  563. treats pages $00 and $ff identically, even though it is a 68030.

  598. Well, I ordered a copy of Archipelagos from them and they shipped it promptly.
  599. It wasn't as fancy as the original copy of Archipelagos I had (this one had
  600. a box, a disk, and a folded sheet of paper with instructions, such as they
  601. were, while my other copy had a mulitpage stapled manual) but it had everything
  602. you needed (and at about 1/4 the price I paid at my local dealer for my
  603. first copy).

  612. Has anyone had any luck getting Archipelagos to work at all?  After I bought my
  613. copy from the local dealer, I broke my ST trying to upgrade the memory and
  614. by the time I got it working again and got around to trying Archipelagos, my
  615. dealer had cleaned out the bank and split town, leaving his financier holding
  616. the bag...so when I found it wouldn't boot, I was stuck.  I ordered a new
  617. copy from Sideline, and it has the same behaviour...can't copy it, can't
  618. boot with it, etc....is this a program that broke on upgrading to TOS 1.4?
  619. Is something flakey in my machine?  Or by some remarkable coincidence did I
  620. just get two bad copies of the same program?  (I'm going to call Sideline
  621. and ask for their help, but I thought since the subject came up here, I'd
  622. ask here as well).

  640. Just one word ahead: Go out, sell your SC1224 and get an SM124 instead. Most
  641. comm packages perform best on a monchrome display.
  642. I use Rufus, a german comms package written by Michael Bernhard. It has build
  643. in X- and Y-modem and uses the GRZ/SZ-zodules for zmodem. It's quite fast,
  644. supports all resolutions, including the TT resolutions; uses different fonts
  645. (with GDOS) and has a built in batch interpreter.
  646. Now, why do I use it? It's fast and reliable, it has the best ansi-emulation
  647. I've ever seen and offers a lot of possibilities. It's shareware, the fee is
  648. 50 DM, that's 30-35$.
  649. The only problem for your is that Rufus is in German, but i've heard rumors
  650. about an english version floating around...
